How does Thioguanine work?

Thioguanine belongs to the group of cancer-fighting medications known as antimetabolites. Thioguanine fights cancer by preventing the growth of cancer cells, which eventually kills them.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Thioguanine?

Alcohol may interact with Thioguanine. Discuss those possible interactions with your health care provider before taking this medication.

It is not recommended to use Thioguanine if you regularly consume a lot of alcohol or if you have a history of alcohol abuse. Both alcohol and Thioguanine can have a negative impact on the liver so a combination of the two may cause damage in the long term.

Can I take Thioguanine when pregnant or breastfeeding?

Thioguanine is classed as Pregnancy Category D by the FDA, which means it can potentially harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor immediately if you are pregnant or become pregnant during treatment with Thioguanine. Also use an adequate form of contraception while using Thioguanine.

It is not yet known if Thioguanine passes into breast milk. Talk to your doctor before breast feeding when you are using Thioguanine.

Is there anything I should discuss with my healthcare professional before taking Thioguanine?

Before taking Thioguanine, discuss your medical history with your doctor, especially if you suffer or have suffered from:

  • Thiopurine methyltransferase or TPMT (an enzyme deficiency)
  • Chickenpox (including recent exposure)
  • Herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Gout
  • Kidney stones
  • Any type of infection
  • A kidney or liver disease

Also inform your doctor of any allergies you have.

What is the recommended dosage of Thioguanine?

The recommended dosage of Thioguanine is 2 mg per kg of body weight. This dosage may be increased to 3 mg per kg if the patient does not respond to the medication within three weeks.
The amount and dosage schedule your doctor will prescribe you depends on many factors, such as your age, weight, height, general health and the type of cancer or condition that is being treated.
